EUREKA SCHOOLS FOUNDATION ESTABLISHES MEMORIAL MUSIC FUND TO HONOR LONG-TIME DISTRICT TEACHER
The Eureka Schools Foundation (ESF) Board of Directors voted at its August meeting to create a memorial fund to support music education in the Eureka Union School District in honor of the late Marjorie Lue “Marge” Hayes. The request to honor the long-time district teacher was made by her family.
Mrs. Hayes passed away in Roseville in June after a battle with cancer. She devoted over 40 years as a 3rd grade teacher in the Eureka School District. Even after her retirement, she spent another 10 years as a substitute teacher in the district. Her husband John, who predeceased her, was a long-time music teacher in the district.
Mrs. Hayes loved music and theatre and played the piano on many occasions, according to her family, whose wish it was to establish a fund to support the music program in the Eureka Union School District. ESF is a non-profit organization that raises money through its partnerships with parents and the local business community to support a number of enrichment programs in the district, including music education, band and choir.
“Mrs. Hayes’ love for music and passion for teaching came through every day. Eureka School District's great success in music is largely attributable to Mrs. Hayes for the time she spent on the program and the passion she had for teaching,” said Trevor Sanders, a former student and current area resident and business owner. “This fund is a great way to honor one of Eureka School District’s great teachers.”
“Thanks to ESF, the EUSD is one of just a handful of districts in the area that is able to continue to offer a comprehensive music education program and we are thrilled that Mrs. Hayes’ family wants to honor her in this way,” said Renee Nash, the current ESF President. “ESF believes that music is an important component in a well-rounded education.”
